GIGAWIND is a research group at the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), dealing with technical problems of offshore wind energy converters (OWEC) in terms of civil engineering and environmental technology since 2000. The field of environmental technology – especially reduction of hydro noise while driving piles in the sea floor – is meanwhile carried out in separate projects. Whereas today the research topic “OWEC Support Structures” is inevitable connected the name GIGAWIND within the German wind energy sector. Since the beginning also expertise from other research institutions contribute to the success of GIGAWIND like the Universität Duisburg-Essen (2000-2007) or the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES (since 2008). Like the previous projects also the current project GIGAWIND life is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation an Nuclear Safety (BMU).
GIGAWIND alpha ventus has been an associated project in the research initiative RAVE – Research at Alpha VEntus and has had access to a big measurement campaign in the test field alpha ventus, the first German offshore wind farm (www.alpha-ventus.de).
